REBEL. TRAILBLAZER. FIGHTER FOR FREEDOM: THE ICONIC FEMINIST HEROINE TAKES CENTRE STAGE IN A DOLL’S HOUSE, PART 2
“Keeps you hanging on each turn of argument and twist of knife, it’s dynamite.”
TimeOut New York
Nora from Ibsen’s A Doll’s House is back!
The stakes couldn’t be higher in this brilliant reimagining of Nora Helmer’s life as she is forced to confront the people she left behind—her husband Torvald, Anne-Marie, the nanny who raised her children, and perhaps most painfully, her daughter Emmy, now a grown woman. A Doll's House, Part 2 grapples with unresolved conflicts, societal norms, and the price of personal freedom.
Lucas Hnath's critically acclaimed 2017 play A Doll's House, Part 2, garnered 8 Tony nominations with unanimous praise from the New York Times, The Guardian and LA Times who declared it as ‘the year’s best play’.
Laura Hill plays Nora Helmer. Laura is no stranger to drama, having spent seven years playing party girl Toni Warner on the TV serial Shortland Street. She will also be familiar to followers of The Brokenwood Mysteries for her recurring role as lawyer Miranda Temple. Also, a talented stage performer, Laura is thrilled to take on the challenge of such a demanding and pivotal role.
Stephen Butterworth will play Nora's devastated husband, supported by Maya Dalziel as the nanny with newcomer Danyelle Mealings rounding out the exceptionally talented cast.
Directed by Plumb Theatre’s Paul Gittins (Prima Facie and Nicola Cheeseman Is Back) working with his usual highly experienced design team of John Parker, Elizabeth Whiting, and Jane Hakaraia to bring this exciting production to the stage.
"My attraction to, A Doll's House Part 2, was immediate after the first reading. The writing is so clever and full of humour, yet the emotional depth of the play is profound. I was also awestruck by the writer's audacity in taking such a famous play as Ibsen's A Doll's House and in essence finishing it off!! We can only guess as to what might have happened to Nora Helmer following the most famous door slam in history, but now, Lucas Hnath has provided an answer that brilliantly confronts the implications of such an action." - Paul Gittins (Director)
NB - No knowledge of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House is needed.
Plumb Theatre was formed in 2017 when Paul Gittins and David Aston decided they wanted a vehicle to produce intimate theatre that was emotionally and intellectually engaging while also placing emphasis on actors and the craft of acting. Our first production, Blonde Poison by Gail Louw, starred Elizabeth Hawthorne in a mesmerising performance that set the bar at the highest level. A level of excellence we will continue to strive for.
I love that feeling when you go to a theatre show and walk out still carrying the play with you. When you talk about it with your partner or friends in the hours or days after the event. It doesn’t happen to me often but I would like it to. It is the experience I want audiences to have when they come to a Plumb production. I would like them to identify that experience with our brand.
The word ‘theatre' comes from the Ancient Greek and means the `seeing place`. Where people came to a special venue to see actors tell stories about the social situation, to be informed and to be moved in a shared experience. For me that’s it. As a person of the theatre I share stories of the human condition with my fellow humans and we go on a journey together. At its most intimate level those watching see themselves on the stage. All too human and connected. We have shared deeply in something. Shared with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.
